Need dental work but have no insurance? If you’re one of the millions of people in this category you already know how tough that can be. Dental prices are grossly inflated to take advantage of the insurance companies who then create high prices for their dental insurance. It’s a loop of greed that leaves many people out in the cold.
Last year I needed some serious dental work…fillings, wisdom teeth removed and more. Working for myself, I had no dental insurance and it had been years and years since I had been to a dentist. One day I happened across dentalplans.com. This is not insurance, but a discount plan for those without insurance. Dental work still costs quite a bit even with this plan but is definitely discounted. To give you some examples:
When I first went in to a dentist they insisted on doing a comprehensive new patient exam with x-rays and all. This would normally have cost $160, but instead cost around $60. As dentalplans.com only cost me $110 for the year it had already almost paid for itself!
* I went in for wisdom teeth extraction. It was still quite expensive, but the plan saved me over $200.
For fillings, the savings were around $50 for each.
During the course of the year I saved around $600-$700. I still spent a lot of money, but at a cost of $110, this was a really good deal. A couple of times I needed prescriptions and I saved on those as well. Some of the plans have discounts for prescriptions, eyeglasses etc and some don’t so look at them closely if you would like those things. The only real drawback was that you needed to choose a dentist who takes the plan. There were quite a few to choose from on their list. Also, if you have a dentist in mind, you can call them to see if they would consider taking it.
Overall, I would highly recommened dentalplans.com. Though it is not comprehensive dental coverage, it saved me hundreds of dollars and can do the same for you.
