What is Herbalism?
Herbalism or Herbal Medicine has been with us since long before records began. Every culture on the planet has a long standing tradition and knowledge of the healing potential of their local flora. Wherever plants grow, so herbalism has grown. Virtually all of our so called modern medicine
has been developed from the herbal tradition, and this is why it is especially important to be aware of the possible hazards of combining herbal and modern medical remedies. They both can have strong effects and they can fight each other in the body.
Having said this, Herbal Medicine is normally much gentler and certainly more natural that the drugs that have been refined, synthesised and produced in a factory. It appears that in the refining process the natural balance of the plant healing is lost - this may be the reason why pharmaceutical
drugs bring with them so many negative side effects, whilst herbal prescriptions give few if any.
Herbalism is an alternative therapy. By this I mean that if you chose to do so, there are herbal solutions that replace all 'modern' medicines. Having said that, there are a few critical situations that are best handled in an A & E ward.
It is perfectly possible to use herbs yourself. To do so safely you need only avail yourself of the wide variety of fine books available on the subject. However if you are currently taking any sort of medication or regularly seeing any sort of health care professional, please be sure to discuss taking any herbal medicine BEFORE you do so, just in case there are
any contraindications.
What is it good for?
A medical herbalist is trained to be able to recognise and diagnose problems, and is well able to help you overcome most if most if not all ailments and diseases. However, herbalism can also be used in a complementary way, as an adjunct to your primary health care regime.
